Lilac Blooms with $1.5M Sale Result

It proved a bittersweet afternoon for the connections of Lilac, who delivered a headline result at Tuesday’s Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale, fetching a commanding $1.5 million when secured by Japan’s powerhouse nursery Northern Farm.

The dual stakes-winning daughter of Justify was the subject of a spirited bidding duel, eventually knocked down to the famed operation, whose Australian acquisitions include elite mares such as She Will Reign, Funstar and Ruthless Dame.

A high-class filly at three, Lilac announced herself with victory in the Listed Jim Moloney Stakes at Caulfield during the Spring, before adding further black type in the J B Carr Stakes in the Autumn. She consistently measured up against the best of her generation, finishing third in the Light Fingers Stakes behind Group 1 winners Lady Shenandoah and Lady Of Camelot, and holding her own when fourth in the Group 1 Surround Stakes.

Purchased for $300,000 out of the 2023 Karaka Yearling Sale in partnership with Annabel Neasham, Lilac went on to bank in excess of $380,000 in prizemoney. Combined with her seven-figure sale, she has delivered a superb return for her ownership group.

Credit is due to Annabel Neasham and Rob Archibald for their handling of the mare throughout her racing career, along with the team at Yarraman Park Stud, who presented her in outstanding order for the sale ring.
