It was a case of quality over quantity for the team at this year’s Inglis Premier Yearling Sale, securing just the one addition to the roster — but what an addition it is.

The filly in question, Lot 503, is a superbly bred daughter of Pierata out of the outstanding racemare Belle En Rouge, the 2021/22 New Zealand Filly of the Year. A flagship performer for Te Akau Racing, Belle En Rouge compiled an enviable race record highlighted by victory in the 2022 New Zealand Oaks, alongside a Group 2 and two Group 3 triumphs during her 20-start career. Her exploits on the track were duly recognised in the sale ring when she was purchased by Yulong for $800,000 via Gavelhouse in 2023.

This filly is the first foal from the elite mare and represents an enticing blend of proven class and emerging influence. She is by Yulong’s Group 1-winning sire Pierata, a son of Pierro who continues to stamp his stock with athleticism and quality. The page is further underpinned by depth and durability, featuring stakes winner and Group 1 New Zealand Oaks runner-up Filante Etoile, along with three-time Group 1 winner Star Dancer — successful twice in the Auckland Classic.

“It’s not often we’re able to secure a filly out of a Group 1-winning mare, so we were naturally thrilled to bring her home,” Director Jason Abrahams said post-purchase. “She has a faultless attitude and, physically, she possesses all the hallmarks of a genuine middle-distance prospect — good length, strength through the body and a lovely, fluent action.

“We’ll now send her to Revelwood Farm to commence her early education before mapping out the next stage of her career and selecting a trainer.”

In a sale renowned for depth and competition, the team may have signed for just one lot — but on pedigree and presence, this filly shapes as a statement acquisition.
