Tyreek Makes His Debut a Touchdown Performance

After two sharp trial wins, expectations were high for Tyreek—a Snitzel gelding trained by John O’Shea and Tom Charlton—and he didn’t disappoint, scoring a professional win on debut in Wednesday’s TAB Handicap (1200m) at Canterbury.

Jumping only fairly after an awkward step out of the gates, Tyreek settled toward the rear while Writego and the stakes-performed Cobra Club rolled forward to control the tempo. Burma Star, now with Chris Waller but formerly trained by James Cummings, enjoyed a perfect run in third under James McDonald and was presented at the top of the straight with every chance.

Just as Burma Star hit the front, Tyreek peeled off his back and lifted late, showing a sharp turn of foot to edge past in the final stages and win by a determined quarter of a length. Race favourite Miss Jones endured a wide run throughout but boxed on gamely to finish third, just a half-length behind.

Trainer John O’Shea was pleased with what he saw from the debutant:

“Good horses are usually defined by what they do at their first start. Albeit he’s got a bit of improvement to come, he was still good enough to win today.”

“He was quite an unassuming yearling, but he’s always shown athleticism, and it’s rewarding to see that translate to race day.”

Jockey Dylan Gibbons also praised the gelding’s attitude:

“He just stepped a bit awkwardly but I think it worked in our favour. Sitting back gave him something to chase and he responded well.”

“He’s a little ripper. He’s got a good turn of foot and the right mindset.”

A $160,000 Magic Millions purchase from Yulong’s draft, Tyreek is the first runner—and now winner—out of Group 2 Hot Danish Stakes winner Reelem In Ruby (Pierro). With the Super Maiden and BOBS Bonus, he pocketed just shy of $60,000 for connections from Wednesday's victory.

A strong debut and a colt with plenty of upside.
