The fourth and final purchase by Champion Thoroughbreds from New Zealand
Bloodstock’s 2012 Karaka Yearling Sale stood out as a top staying type by up and coming sire, Savabeel.
You may have heard of Scarlett Lady. She dominated
Australasia’s 3YO filly scene last season, winning the Group 1 Queensland Oaks,
Group 2 Travis Stakes & Group
3 Doomben Roses in an amazing 6-pronged win streak.
Or maybe Sangster,
who streaked home to claim 2011's Group 1 VRC Derby, My Emotion who won
the Group 2 Moonee Valley Fillies Stakes defeating Speedy Natalie and Aloha, or
Group 2 Brisbane Cup winner Tullamore? Top quality horses that the average
racing fan would know very well by now, that are all by young sire, Savabeel.
Savabeel
has had 13 stakes-winners out of 122 individual winners from three crops at
racing age across the globe.
He boasts a very credible 12%
stakes-winners to winners ratio from the stock that race in Australia.
On the racetrack, three weeks after defeating his
peers in the Group 1 AJC Spring
Champion Stakes, Savabeel won
the career-defining WFA championship – the Cox Plate, joining Octagonal, Red Anchor, Surround and
now So You Think as the only
three year olds to do so in 35 years. It's a race we would love to win with this colt.
This typey colt (pictured below) is from an impressive female family. He is out of
South African bred mare Pin Oak, daughter of US bred Sadler’s Wells son, Fort
Wood, who has already had success as a broodmare sire, being the grand sire to
no less than twenty one stakes-winners to date.
Pin Oak is a full-sister to Group 2 winner Cycad, the
winner of seven races from 1400m to 3000m. Talk about versatility! And Trade
Specialist, a stakes-winner who had the same staying aptitude, winning from 1600m
to 2400m. Pin Oak also has a half-sibling in the form of Slumdogmillionaire who
recently made it two wins from two starts winning the Listed 1800m Turffontein
Sea Cottage Stakes in fine fashion.

The female family goes back to powerhouse son of Sadler’s Wells,
Runyon (who is bred similarly to dam, Pin Oak with the influence of Sadler's Wells), who added to his handy collection of black type when he travelled to
Australia, from Europe, to contest and win the Group 1 VATC Underwood Stakes,
defeating Group 1 VATC Caulfield Cup winner (among three other Group 1 wins), Mannerism.
Needless to say, this colt's family is chock-a-block full of long distance
runners and winners and we think this colt has all the makings to emulate his relations.
You can really see the influence of grand-sire Zabeel in his type, which we’re
very happy about. Trainer John O’Shea has had plenty of success with the Zabeel
progeny and is a huge fan of them as types.
“This colt looks a definite stayer and has a lovely walk and the right physique to make it over some ground.
Hopefully this can be my Cox Plate horse in a few years!” commented O’Shea.
We will complete this colt's PDS (product disclosure
statement) in a week at which time, he will be available for purchase.
