Popular Win for Military Gal

Breednet - Media Release - Wednesday, 4 August 2010

Quality mare Military Gal bounced back to her best and notched career win three when she cruised home in the Panasonic Specialists Air Network Handicap (1150m) at Randwick on Wednesday for Champion Thoroughbreds.

Just turned four, Military Gal has shown above average ability throughout her 11 start career and her latest success was well deserved.

Carrying the Champion Thoroughbreds colours, Military Gal (pictured) raced off the speed before coming with a strong run in the straight under talented apprentice Nathan Berry.

Winning trainer John O'Shea was delighted the $120,000 purchase from the 2008 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale was back in the winner's stall.

"It was great to see," O'Shea said. "It was a very good ride I thought."

"I said to young Berry before the race that the fence might have been starting to chop out and to come a little bit wider and that probably played into her hands."

Berry was impressed with the soft win.

"It was a great performance," he said.

"I rode her like she was the best horse in the race - got her out to a better part of the track and it turned out she was (the best)."

"I love riding for Mr O'Shea - he doesn't give you any specific instructions - he lets you ride your own race."

"If you have them in a position where they travel well and are happy they're always going to finish the race off."

"Hopefully she can get some confidence off that and get back to her best," Berry summed up.

Part owned by media identities Terry Kennedy and Greg Radley, Military Gal has already earned $125,900 from just 11 starts.

A daughter of star Magic Millions graduate General Nediym, Military Gal (pictured) was sold at the Gold Coast by renowned Hunter Valley based thoroughbred nursery Widden Stud.

She is the second winner, from two to race, for the former smart Melbourne mare Bella Moxie.

A five time winner at distances from 1000 to 1600 metres, Bella Moxie has also produced the Macau Derby Trial runner-up and four time Macau winner Living Pegasus.

Further back it is the family of Sandown Guineas winner Polar Air, Summer Cup winner Perfect Jet and six time     Adelaide stakes winner Merlot Now.
