Petraeus has a load of ability but has had niggling injuries that have not only prevented him from doing much racing, but also doing enough work to get him on song for the races.
He passed his first real test when he came through trials at Randwick and Rosehill, finishing fifth and second respectively. He then had his first start under much anticipation on the 9th December at Rosehill. Petraeus finished 4th in the 12 horse field behind the up and coming Commandare, in what has proved to be a very strong form race.
Petraeus old niggling injury concerns popped up again after the run, which ultimately put an end to the potential Gold Coast trip for the 3yo Magic Millions event. We are hoping to have him back in work soon, and when he does get to the track, it will take a good horse to get past him.
Petraeus returned to the stable on 10th March looking very well after spending 10 days at the Pre Trainer. During his spell he was gelded, which will help him focus on racing. He trialled exceptionally at Rosehill over 900m on 4th May, finishing 2nd to Group 2 winner Monton, beaten just over 2 lengths. He travelled to Wyong on 18th May for his 2nd start in an 1100m Maiden. He ran creditibly, finishing 6th, beaten just over 2 1/2 lengths but is still very green. His next start was at Canterbury on 2nd June with the addition of blinkers where he duly saluted on a heavy surface, showing his true potential.
