Southern Lad Tackles Rosehill On Saturday

Talented Ocean Park gelding Southern Lad heads to Rosehill on Saturday for his fifth career start- his first at Saturday metropolitan level. It was well documented how unlucky he was last start when flashing home with an incredible run to finish 3rd, beaten 0.3L when set a task, settling at the tail of the field some 15 lengths off the eventual winner Niccobelle.

His sectionals for the day were outstanding but trainer John O'Shea is well aware he'll need a bit of luck with the poor draw this Saturday- "He'll probably come into gate 10 or 11 after scratchings in the field of 12" commented John after acceptances were released on Wednesday. "He'll need a bit of luck but I can't fault the horse at home and he's taken good improvement from last start". In-form hoop Tim Clark will jump aboard for the first time.

Saturday is no doubt Southern Lad's biggest test to date in Benchmark 78 company. The top-weight and last start winner Newsfan (Kim Waugh) is the favourite. She gets in well with the 2kg claim from apprentice Sam Weatherley and has the advantage of getting a nice run for barrier 6. The 5YO Zoffany mare has had 7 start, never finishing out of the top 2 including a 2nd placing in the Provincial Championships Final at Randwick over Autumn carnival earlier this year.
