Southern Lad Shines Under Canterbury Lights

Lightly raced Ocean Park gelding Southern Lad notched up his third career win from just six starts at Canterbury on Friday night. It was a fitting victory for the team, after last week announcing the retirement of his older half brother and multiple stakes winner Kuro (by Denman). Southern Lad won first-up this preparation over 1100m at Wyong before putting in an eye-catching performance on Melbourne Cup Day at Randwick, flashing home from last to finish 3rd, beaten under a length.

Last start, the barrier and track pattern was his undoing at Rosehill Gardens over 1300m and trainer John O'Shea placed him well to get him back in the winner's circle on Friday night. "We just thought he'd appreciate the drop back in grade at this stage of his career and a drop back in distance because his racing pattern requires a fast tempo which he back at the 1250m" commented John post-race.

Southern Lad was graced with a good barrier draw and a welcome 3 kg weight relief from apprentice Robbie Dolan who rode him a treat with the blinkers added for the first time.

Southern Lad's half-sister by Darci Brahma will be offered at the 2019 NZB Karaka yearling sale in January.

A big congratulations to his fantastic group of owners Mr J N Allen, Mperezive syndicate, Mr G C Green, Mrs J S Willis, Mr B Quinlan, Mr J A Denny, Mr S Bunt, Mr S Thatcher, Mr D H Long, Mr G R Tomlinson and Mr R M Farrar
