Southern Lad Primed For Scone Task

Promising Ocean Park gelding Southern Lad is ready to roll second-up at Scone and his trainer John O'Shea isn't deterred by the wide draw. The 4 year old is having his 9th career start and aiming for his 4th win when he lines up in Race 4 on Saturday- The Vinery Stud Benchmark 78 1100m in a full field of 16 runners.

Coming off a solid first-up effort at Randwick on ANZAC Day, Southern Lad motored home under 61.5kg's over 1000m to be beaten 0.4L. On Saturday, he steps up to 1100m- a distance he has won over before and drops 6.5kg's from last start with the 3kg claim from in-form apprentice Billy Owen.

"He's come on really well from last start and his work at home has been of a good standard so we expect him to be fighting out the finish on Saturday" commented trainer John O'Shea.

The BM78 field has drawn some good opposition, namely the James Cummings' trained Wagner whose coming off a last start 2nd at the Hawkesbury stand-alone meeting, however he is dropping back from 1300m to 1100m. He's a horse that has appreciated dropping back in grade after contesting in stakes races over his last two preps.

Another fancied runner is the Grant Allard trained Americana Magic- a 4yo gelding who won a BM84 race last start over 1100m. He also gets in well at the weights with Samantha Clenton's 2kg claim.

"From barrier 15 or 16 we'll be neutral out of the gates and take a position in the second half of the field and hopefully we can take full advantage of Scone's long straight and be finishing over the top of them late" O'Shea commented after acceptances.

Best of luck to Southern Lad's big group of owners!
