Debut Win For Promising Sprinter Rioli

The good run continues to roll on for Champion Victoria who celebrated their 5th winner since August 1st when debut runner Rioli saluted at Sale on Sunday. The 3 year old Sepoy gelding was coming off several jumpouts in preparation for the 1000m event. He bounced well from barrier 8 and found a nice trail behind the leaders Not Approved (Michael Hibbs) and Luck Be My Lady (Robbie Laing). He travelled strongly around the hometurn and sprinted home too well to defeat his rivals by half a length.

"Ryan Maloney had been doing all the work on him (Rioli) and he got suspended, so I took over from Pug and I spoke to him on the way here and he told me he was pretty push button and he was spot on,” Noel Callow told Racing.com after the race.

"We were pretty confident coming into the race, his work at home has been very good and we came here today thinking he would be one of the chances so it's good that he has come through and won" Racing Manager Suman Hedge said post-race. "He's a really burley type as you can see and Robert (Smerdon) has just been getting him fitter and fitter, making sure he was ready to race but his work has always been good at home and very professional so we're hopeful he can go on with it now and onto better things".

Rioli was purchased from last year's Magic Millions January sale for $140,000 from the Newgate Farm Draft on behalf of Blanford Lodge in New Zealand. He rated extreamly well on the cardio and genetics testing performed at the sale by Matchem Genetics which branded him a 'must have'. Rioli is by Golden Slipper winner SEPOY out of the TIGER HILL mare OUR TIGRESS. She has now produced two runners for two winners including a filly by Starcraft, named Starstripe who has won over 1400m & 1600m in New Zealand.

Well done to his team of owners Champion Thoroughbreds Victoria, Dr L H C Wong, Dr G T Hall, Mr S G Mcpeake, Barham Racing, Mr K W Burford, Mr S Dignan, Mr I F Foster, Mr P N Parkes, Mr K A Osborn, Mr G K Fish, Mrs K A Fraser, Mr N G Rockley, Mr S Tran, Mr A J Maher, Mr J D Starcevic, Mr S M Higgins
