Affectionately known as "The King" and trended on twitter as #GTK

"The King" raced for Champion for over 4 years and in that time was restricted to 22 race starts, but he made them count with 5 wins, 4 seconds and 2 thirds.

He was near black and had a great story. Unwanted as a yearling at the Magic Millions, Champion picked him up as a passed in lot for $65,000 from Attunga Stud. In his first 6 months of syndication he only managed to attract one 5% owner. His Product Disclosure Statement was reissued and even then he only attracted another 35%. Eventually the Number One Club claimed a large portion, and Champion also held onto some in order to get him completed.

As a young horse he had some niggling issues that prevented him from racing but they were never going to be anything more than growing pains and immaturity. His trainer John O'Shea said early on he wished he had a stable full of horses like Carmine as he was a genuine horse who put in on every occasion.

In his first racing preparation he won his maiden in Canberra on Black Opal Day, at his second race start, after running 2nd on debut at Kembla to eventual Gr 2 winner, and Gr1 placegetter, Rolling Pin! On that day he was beaten by 1L at level weights...quite a performance. When he won his maiden, the horse he beat and gave 2kgs to, was Fill The Page, a future stakes winner of the Canberra Cup!

His second preparation, he won at Gosford and Kembla before coming to Canterbury for a night meeting and running second to Nobby Snip, who came out at his 2 susequent race starts and won 2 stakes races.

His third preparation saw him win at Rosehill on New Years Day which was a great win and provided his owners with a memorable day all round and was a great way to start up the new year. His following preparation he won at Eagle Farm for us, and it was not long after that he sustained an injury which required time in the paddock and given his age the decision was made to sell him on. He provided the stable and his owners with a great deal of fun over a long period and he will be long remembered as one of the "originals" for Champion Thoroughbreds and he represented many of the qualities the brand would like to be known for. Well done King #GTK
