In the opening session of the 2012 Magic Millions Sale on the 11th of January, Champion Thoroughbreds bid on and won the yearling which was on the top of our wish list. He is a colt by Champion American two year old, War Pass.
Raised at the hugely successful thoroughbred nursery, of Yarraman Park in the Hunter Valley, Lot 124 was situated on the top of the 'wish list' of Champion Thoroughbreds' director, Jason Abrahams and Champion Thoroughbreds' trainer, John O'Shea.
His sire War Pass is an American stallion who as a two year old won all four of the races he contested. He won USA's premier juvenile race, the 2007 Grade 1 Breeders Cup Juvenile, by a stunning 4 3/4 lengths leaving soon to be Group 1 winning 3yo Pyro a distant second, a feat which War Pass had already achieved that season when winning the 2007 Grade 1 Belmont Champagne Stakes three weeks earlier, again, trumping Pyro.
His dam, Mi Chiamo (which means 'My Name' in Italian) boasts bloodlines which also receive a big tick from us. Reinforcing the two year old strengths of sire, War Pass, Mi Chiamo was placed 3rd in the Listed Gimcrack Stakes (behind subsequent Group 2 MRC Schillaci Stakes winner, Segments), the first 2yo race of the season in 2003. She is by Catbird, a sire who won the Group 1 Golden Slipper, the world's richest two year old race. Not to mention that he hails from the family of Group 1 winners Mr Bureaucrat and All Black Gold.
This colt is an outstanding type. Upon purchasing the colt, Jason Abrahams commented: "When he was pulled out of his stable and paraded for us, John and I just wrote "outstanding" on our catalogue page. Physically he is a real runner."
Trainer John O'Shea commented: "He is one of the most athletic colts in the sale. He was our number one pick on the wish list and we got him! He's a very exciting pick up and I'm glad that he's going to be in our colours come next January."
Not only a blue blooded and athletic specimen of a horse but his siblings have already kicked goals. "This colt's three year old half-sister is already a proven racehorse. Ingham Magic has had nine starts to exceed $175,000 in prize money. And the other half-sister has already won a two year old race. I think we have bought an ideal two year old for next year's races." - Jason Abrahams.
This colt sold in record time, we had all of him accounted for in under 2 weeks. We're very excited to have this colt broken in and will aim him at the Magic Millions 2yo series, which is a specific set of two year old races for Magic Millions sale graduates, culminating in the $2,000,000 Magic Millions Two Year Old Classic.
This colt has now been named. Passarli means 'to pass them' in Italian. A well thought out name by one of his owners, Marcia Bailey, as it has an influence from both his sire's name 'War Pass' and his dam's name, 'Mi Chiamo' which means 'My Name' in Italian.
This colt is currently at Leigh Equine Services and is underway with his breaking-in. The breakers have reported that he is a lovely moving colt and is making all the right progression.
