This filly was selected and purchased by John O’Shea at the country’s most selective yearling sale, the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale. She was bred and grown out at the ultra successful Think Big Stud, who in recent years have produced the Gr1 VRC Oaks winner Faint Perfume.
Her sire, Shamardal, needs little introduction. He's a four time Gr1 winner over distances spreading from 1400m, to 1600m and also out to 2100m, he has left progeny who have exceeded under Australian conditions such as Faint Perfume (VRC Oaks 2500m), Captain Sonador (Gr1 Epsom Hcp 1600m) and Shamoline Warrior (Gr3 MRC Norman Robinson 2000m). Her dam Initial, is by Flying Spur, who as a damsire has excelled with progeny such as Gr1 winners Sebring (STC Golden Slipper 1200m), Headway (VRC Coolmore Stud Stakes 1200m), and Grand Journey (WATC Derby 2400m). The pedigree has plenty of stakes winners to represent it, and the average distance of the family’s runners is 1400m. This is very important when considering this filly is being aimed at the classic events for fillies, in that Shamardal and Flying Spur combined, are a good mix between speed and stamina, which is required to win at the top level.
After being broken and having a spell at Wyong's Emeren Park, Sagari came into the stable for her first preparation and did not put a foot wrong. She had a fantastic jump out where she performed exceedingly well. John described her as "flying" as she flew from the barriers in her first jump out, she led the field to be first to the turn before being pulled up. "Her first gallop was very special and she has only gotten better. She is a very exciting filly." commented John O'Shea.
Following this effort we decided to put her out for a eight week spell. She then returned to the stable looking fantastic.
She had her first trial, and won it my a head, in an enormous show of talent - seeing as it was her first trial! She then went on to her second trial where she was ridden behind the speed (she was ridden up front and on the speed in her first trial), and finished in the latter half of the field having run on well. She learnt a lot from the trial.
For quite a while we had an Inglis Bonus Race at Hawkesbury on the fifth of May in mind her her first start. As in panned out this was to work out and we lined her up for the effort. She had been working very well in the lead up with another Champion Thoroughbreds stable member, Hoss Amor.
Unfortunately we drew a pretty wide gate in barrier 11, not usually the worst you can draw, but on a tight track like Hawkesbury it really took its toll. We had to burn a lot of energy getting to the front of the field and once we did, just ran out of puff at the end.
The next morning the decision was made to put her out for a little break so that she can further develop and mature and be back in a couple of months to kick off her second campaign.
